What projects are suitable for Funding Garage?

Funding Garage provides a crowdfunding platform specifically for the automotive community. Because Funding Garage is pioneering this effort for the industry, many have wondered what types of projects would come into the spotlight in the coming months. I do not have a magic mirror hanging on my wall, but I want to offer you the following perspectives: what I think would happen and what I think should happen.

Typically when I tell people about Funding Garage for the first time, the reaction I most often get is: “this website would be great for car enthusiasts that need money to finish their garage project,” or “companies can utilize the success of a crowdfunding campaign to test the water for a new product or service.” I don’t disagree with these statements and in fact we may actually see many of these types of projects dominate Funding Garage in the early stages; some will be successful and some won’t. This is because the early adopters of our platform would inevitably be auto enthusiasts; endlessly pursuing the goal of personalizing their own vehicles or helping others personalize their vehicles.

I do anticipate the second wave of platform adopters to arrive shortly after; agents of change with the passion to drive societal impact by utilizing the automotive theme as a backdrop. I predict that we will see a gradual influx of projects focused on addressing educational development, technological advancement, and transportation safety. We may see campaigns promoting hands-on design competitions for high school students, the innovation of the next generation affordable EV vehicles, or the invention of a mobile app to warn drivers of real-time accidents in the immediate vicinity to avoid a multiple car pile-up phenomenon in a low visibility environment. This movement would open up the audience base to the greater population, allowing contributions to come from alternative sources impacted by each project scope.

This so called second wave is a necessary phase for the growth of Funding Garage as well as showing the world the greater potential of the crowdfunding platform.

Side note: in the crowdfunding realm, the “crowd” dictates (or has a large influence over) the momentum, direction, and adoption of each campaign. The accumulation of the series of successfully funded projects will act as a branding agent for Funding Garage, shaping the playground for the types of project creators and contributors likely to be attracted by the website. On the flip side, the success of campaigns depends heavily on the creator’s ability to convert social capital to financial capital where 80% of the funds will come from people already within his/her social network or will be reached through the social marketing campaigns.

I know it’s cliché but probably the most appropriate to say: “only time will tell.” In the mean time, I will follow up with a series of blog posts with generic examples of the types of projects I would anticipate to see on our website.

VoicesHeardMedia: Must Have Tools for Serious Crowdfunding Campaigns

VoicesHeardMedia (VHM) is pioneering the advancement of user engagement on social space, and Funding Garage wants to jump on this bandwagon early. You might have noticed that we are already sporting a VHM Q&A Box on our pre-launch page, and we intend on maximizing its use leading up to and beyond the official launch.

Several months ago while Funding Garage was in the concept/research phase, we noticed that Autoblog.com was using VHM to tie in hundreds of thousands of strangers from all over the world to hold an organized discussion in one centralized web location. We see the power in this.

At first we had our doubts on whether VHM would even be interested in dealing with a start-up company in the conceptual phase because most of their existing clienteles are major media corporation (AOL, FOX) and celebrities (Alicia Keys), but a phone call with VHM’s VP of Sales, Walter Hirsekorn, revealed that people at VHM promote the entrepreneur spirit and assured us that VHM will fully support us through our development phases.

According to Funding Garage’s founder, Dominic Augusts Lin, “I believe that VHM tools will soon become a “must have” for any serious crowdfunding or crowdsourcing campaign organizer,” referring to the ability for VHM tools to be embedded in increasing number of social platforms (Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc). Funding Garage plans on integrating VHM tools into the user interface of its website, and when it officially launches later this summer (2012), organizers can seamlessly turn on an off VHM module pending on the stage of their project development and need.

Day 1 Summary from SOHO LOFT TSL Crowdfunding Conference in Los Angeles

Memo: Dominic Augustus Lin writing from TSL Crowdfunding Conference in Los Angeles, March 13th, 2012

There were a lot of great discussions being held around the topic of crowdfunding at this SOHO LOFT TSL Captial Creation and Crowdfunding Conference, and I want to summarize the things that resonated with me personally.

Crowdfunding Fuels Job Creation
According to Wil Schroter of Virtucon Ventures and Candace Klein of Bad Girl Ventures and SoMoLend, the typical entrepreneur “needs only around $15,000 to $18,000 initial seed money to get off the ground.” That amount is typically outside of what can be raised through family and friends but far too low for angel route. There is a gap, and crowdfunding is the bridge. Through crowdfunding, entrepreneurs now have a new route for raising funds, thereby increasing the number of entrepreneurs and the potential boost in job creation. In relations to the automotive community, I personally believe that a large majority of entrepreneurs with great ideas to advance the automotive industry can benefit from using crowdfunding as a stepping stone into something greater.

Purchasing Equity through Crowdfunding
It is illegal; to purchase a “piece” of the company through crowdfunding today. Jason Best, the co-founder of Startup Exemption is trying to make a difference, and through the passing of H.R. 2930, a bill that has passed the House and is currently being evaluated by the Senate, the rules will change. The biggest question I have is how would the passing of this bill change Crowdfunding as we know it today? How many investors exist out there today shy away from participating in crowdfunding because they won’t see a tangible ROI? If crowdfunding websites today can raise hundreds of millions of dollars each year without this bill, would the amount double or triple after the bill passes? We have to start by examining the types of successful crowdfunding campaigns today.

Reward Based Crowdfunding versus Long Term Job Creation
If you ask people today what they know about crowdfunding, they would point you to one of the major crowdfunding websites for creative projects. What I’ve learned from attending this conference is that crowdfunding websites as we know it today only represent one type of crowdfunding platform called reward based crowdfunding where contributors receive perks from donating money to a campaign. The nature of projects funded by reward based crowdfunding platform is that they are typically short term. A campaign to raise money for an artist recording her first album ends when the album get distributed, and a campaign for indie film ends when the film hits the screen. One could argue that producing an album or a film drives job creation, but can crowdfunding be the starting point for the next Apple; thereby creating thousands of jobs? I believe it can happen. There is no restriction around how a campaign originator must use the money raised through crowdfunding. It can be used for product development, PR campaign, or even paying off debt. It will all depend on the nature of the campaign and the vision of the creator. Just be aware that through the current reward based crowdfunding platform, your committed contributors have an expectation that at the end of the campaign they would receive the perk you had promised them at the beginning. This, however, could all change when H.R. 2930 passes. With the passing of H.R. 2930 comes the introduction of investors into the mix of people contributing to campaigns, and they may prefer ROI instead. In that framework, the responsibility of a Crowdfunded entity will shift from focusing on product/service delivery to managing company growth.

Interview With Dominic Augustus Lin

Mindy Chen (Funding Garage writer) spoke with Dominic Augustus Lin, the founder of FundingGarage.com - recently released a pre-launch website to the public. Lin talked about his motivation, visions, and challenges behind Funding Garage.

Mindy Chen: So what is your real name, Augustus or Dominic?
Dominic Augustus Lin: Well, that depends. On the west coast where I grew up everyone calls me Dominic, and on the east coast everyone calls me Augustus (Gus for short). I started a practical joke when I attended Rensselaer in Upstate New York and told people my name was Gus. Apparently the joke's on me because that name has been stuck with me ever since. It's quite interesting to observe the confusion when east coast friends visit west coast, and vise versa.

MC: Since we are on the west coast, let's go with Dominic then.
DL: Sure that's fine.

MC: Tell me about how Funding Garage got started.
DL: The automotive community is filled with all types of interesting projects, inventions, competitions, etc, but many of these initiatives don't reach beyond the conceptual phase due to the lack of funding, exposure, and audience buy-in. Automotive enthusiast forums are great because it's free to use and gives you access to people with same interest, but it functions terribly when used as a fundraising tool. Government sanctioned or privately held awards competition provides great funding for contest winners, but has a high barrier to entry for the average person. Educational institutions have great relations with major automakers, holding curriculum to boost innovations, but rarely do projects get recognition in the commercial world. There must be a better way for the average person to effectively raise money and awareness for his/her unique project, and that's the vision behind Funding Garage.

MC: Why did you choose crowdfunding as the platform for Funding Garage.
DL: Crowdfunding is a method for raising funding by soliciting contributions from individuals coming together because of common passion and trust to support efforts initiated by other people. The automotive community is fueled by individual's passion for the pursuit of innovation, education, collaboration; much like the music and film industry. We've seen what crowdfunding can do for the music and film community; it is time for the automotive community to jump on the wagon.

MC: How is this site different from other crowdfunding websites?
DL: Crowdfunding websites that exist today aren't that much different from each other except when it comes to a few ground rules such as % commission upon successful campaign, what types of projects fits or don't fit in their criteria, what happens if campaign doesn't reach its fund raising goal, etc. With that said, it's easy to see that less than 1% of all projects supported by existing crowdfunding websites are related to the automotive industry. There are so many great ideas and projects out there (i.e. development of alternative energy vehicles, mobile apps for cars) but very little of them receive support through crowdfunding. Funding Garage is created to bridge the inventors/creators with the automotive community.

MC: Where do you see Funding Garage in 3 years?
DL: I believe Funding Garage provides an web interface that is long due for the automotive world, and if the automotive community embraces crowdfunding through Funding Garage, this website would gain some significant traction within the first year. In 3 years time I see individuals or groups utilizing Funding Garage to drive some key initiatives with impact to the national audience, driving marketing trends and consumer behavior.

MC: What is your biggest challenge right now?
DL: The biggest challenge, in my opinion, is how well we go about spreading the word about what we're trying to do for the automotive community, and attracting not only the individuals that would benefit from this platform, but individuals with key strategic ties to help bring Funding Garage to the next level. The challenge is in how well we can manage the awareness campaign with limited resources and capital without running out of cash.

MC: How is Funding Garage being funded currently?
DL: We are at the very beginning of market validation phase, and we've been blessed and lucky to receive some initial capital from close friends and family members. I personally am the biggest financial contributor to date with the most skin in the game which is a message to potential investors that I honestly believe in the potential of Funding Garage. We are planning to go for another round of fundraising with the goal to raise $100k in the coming weeks.

MC: Sounds like the first crowdfunding campaign on Funding Garage could be raising funds for the website.
DL: Realistically you are not that far off.

MC: What's next on your agenda?
DL: I am attending TSL's Los Angeles Capital Creation and Crowdfunding Conference next Tuesday, March 13th and 14th (eventbrite link), and I hope to learn about the latest happening in the crowdfunding world from industry experts with the goal to meet some people that may be able to help accelerate Funding Garage.

MC: Thank you for your time.
DL: Any time Mindy.
